PROJECT: MUSIC HEALS US is proud to present the fourth of a 16-part digital concert series based on the college-accredited, Beethoven-inspired music composition course being created for incarcerated students. This course, named MUSIC FOR THE FUTURE, is an expansion of our previous 5-day intensive workshops which PMHU teaching artists have given in state and federal prisons for the past five years.
For the fourth installment of this Groupmuse Centerstage series, you will have the opportunity to take part in the ongoing creation of this exciting new digital composition course, experiencing all sixteen of Beethoven's String Quartets in a new and up-close way, and learn how our students compose using the same tools Beethoven used. We hope you'll join us to take a deep dive into the beauty, inspiration, pain, and redemption that are contained within Beethoven's music, while learning how to craft original works through breaking down Beethoven's compositional process.
This week we will examine Beethoven’s first string quartet of his middle, “heroic” period, the first of the three Rasumovsky quartets. The few years that passed since his earlier Op. 18 string quartet collection were extremely eventful both on the historical and on the personal level, inspiring Beethoven to embark on a new style of composition, as demonstrated in some of his greatest masterpieces such as the "Eroica" Symphony and the two grand piano sonatas, "Waldstein" and the "Appassionata". In this week’s episode, we find Beethoven returning to the genre of the string quartet as a more mature man and much more ambitious composer. Join us as we look both into the upheavals in Beethoven’s life and into the major changes in his compositional style and artistic goals as they were manifested in his string quartet in F major, Op. 59, No. 1.
