Like the chapters of a great novel, each of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Four Novelletten movements will anchor Saratoga Orchestra’s “A Novel Idea” program. Music of Joseph Bologne, regarded as one of Mozart’s most accomplished contemporaries and the first classical composer of African descent will be interwoven into the program as will the portions of the string serenades by Tchaikovsky and Dvořák. Vivian Fine and Gerald Finzi, two composers that may not be quite as familiar, along with a beautiful arrangement of George Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps round out the program.

Since 2016, Whidbey’s Saratoga Orchestra, under the leadership of music director Anna Edwards, has gained national recognition in an effort to highlight women and BIPOC composers. To enhance the concert experience, former KING-FM radio host Marta Zekan will offer insight into the composer's music as she guides the audience along the program.

COVID-19 Protocols: The health and safety of our patrons, musicians, volunteers, and community are top priority. As such, we are joining performing arts organizations across the Pacific Northwest region in requiring proof of vaccination for entry to all our performances in the foreseeable future. Additionally, masking is required at our events.

All patrons, staff, and volunteers will be required to wear masks.

Proof of vaccination with a matching ID will be required at the door when you arrive at the performance. This can be with either your actual CDC vaccination card or a clear and readable photograph of your vaccination card on your cell phone.

We do understand that there may be some medical and/or religious exceptions to this, thus require those who are unvaccinated to show proof of a negative, approved COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the performance.

About Saratoga Orchestra of Whidbey Island

Whidbey's Saratoga Orchestra formed as an expansion of the Saratoga Chamber Players founded by Whidbey Island's legendary violinist and arts supporter, Michael Nutt. Previously known as Saratoga Chamber Orchestra, the name is derived from the beautiful Saratoga Passage that flanks the east side of Whidbey Island and the stand of trees known as the Saratoga Woods. In 2007, Legh W. Burns, Music Director Emeritus, began a regular concert series performing throughout the island for Whidbey audiences. Dr. Anna Edwards has led the orchestra as Music Director since 2015, and has brought national attention to the ensemble for its innovative programming championing women, BIPOC and underrepresented composers and hosting the highly esteemed Pacific Northwest Conducting Institute held each summer.
