Popping the cork on our musical tribute to Latin America, we open with a spiffily arranged tango by Argentinian legend Astor Piazolla before unveiling an endearing solo guitar feature by Radamés Gnattali – a 20th-century Brazilian composer new to us. In his fourth Riverside Symphony performance, Mexican-American composer Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon is represented by a new summation of his celebrated, evening-length scenic cantata drawn from countryman Juan Rulfo’s iconic novel, Pedro Páramo. A trio of new arrangements for guitar orchestra in collaboration with Orquesta Meridional and Heitor Villa-Lobos’ tuneful early opus complete this varied program.
