The emphatic, inescapable melodicism of Brian Prunka's music is the thread that connects his jazz background and his nearly 20 years in NYC's Arabic music scene. Drawing on the Arabic maqam tradition, his original compositions are filtered through a deeply-rooted jazz sensibility and a resolute focus on the supremacy of melody. Lending their talents to his music for this performance are musicians who likewise have a foot in two (or more) traditions: Award-winning cellist Eric Allen has a background in jazz and classical music, as well as Arabic and Indian classical music. Violinist Sarah Mueller has performed with with folk ensemble Forêt Endormie, Sicilian/Calabrian folk music with Malandrino, the New York Arabic Orchestra, as well as various Americana and Balkan music groups. Drummer Philip Mayer, a longtime collaborator in Sharq Attack as well as Prunka's guitar trio and other groups, has an extensive resume from indie rock to jazz to Arabic and Turkish music, including such diverse artists as Natalie Merchant, Kishi Bashi, Nano Raies, and Hazmat Modine.

Ludovica Burtone is a violinist, improviser, and composer based in Brooklyn. She has performed worldwide as both a soloist and chamber musician and she finds herself in a multitude of musical settings. From premiering new works for chamber ensembles to collaborating with theaters, to performing in a jazz quartet or big band, Ludovica’s ability to adapt to various creative musical scenery has led her to an eclectic and successful career. Ludovica presents at The Owl a night of Brazilian music on violin, supported by two of the most prominent Brazilian musicians of the NYC scene: Leandro Pellegrino on guitar and Rogerio Boccato on percussion. The concert will spaciate from choro, to afro samba arrangements, to originals proposed in an intimate, yet captivating setting.
