Nyokabi Kariũki — Selected works

Nyokabi Kariũki (b. 1998, she/her) is a Kenyan composer and performer based between Kenya and the United States. Her sonic imagination is ever-evolving, with compositions ranging from classical contemporary & experimental music, to film, choral, pop, and explorations into sound art, electronics, and (East) African musical traditions. She embraces the title of composer-performer often, possessing a wealth of performance experience as not only a classically-trained pianist of 16+ years, but also as a vocalist and most recently as a player of several instruments from the African continent, including the mbira and djembe. Her art seeks to bridge her diverse influences — from her penchant for experimentation & improvisation, to her African upbringing and Western classical training — together into a mélange of accessible, evocative, and meaningful art.

anna rg is an artist working in Brooklyn, moving outwards from her immersion in traditional music. Her project of 7 years, "Anna & Elizabeth" has performed at Carnegie Hall, Big Ears Festival, Newport Folk Festival, and NPR's Tiny Desk. Their third record, the invisible comes to us, was recently released on Smithsonian Folkways, and called "a radical expansion of what folk songs are supposed to do" by The New Yorker. She was 2018 guest curator of traditional music at the Big Ears Music Festival in Knoxville; was a fellow at The MacDowell Colony, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Berea College Traditional Music Archive, Bang on a Can's Found Sound Nation; and teaches fiddle and banjo across the country.
