The uniquely sensual colors of clarinet and piano promise to dazzle in this program by two extraordinary musicians. Anthony McGill, principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic, has been hailed for his "trademark brilliance, penetrating sound and rich character" (The New York Times). Anna Polonsky, McGill’s partner on our stage, is "a chamber musician of exceptional refinement [with] an appealing touch and compelling interpretive skills (The New York Times) and "consistently captivating" (The Washington Post).
Attending in person – COVID-19 Protocols: To ensure our patrons’ health and security, as well as the safety of our performers and staff, Dumbarton Concerts has implemented the following policy:
- Proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 is required to attend all Dumbarton Concerts indoor performances.
- Children under 12 years of age and patrons with a medical condition or a closely-held religious belief that prevents vaccination must provide proof of a recent (72 hours) negative COVID-19 test to attend an indoor performance.
- Masks are required at all times for all staff, patrons, and visitors regardless of vaccination status in all indoor spaces of the Dumbarton Church.
- Please bring a photo of your CDC vaccination card or proof of recent negative COVID-19 test to be allowed admittance to each performance you attend. Performance ticket holders who do not comply with these policies will not be admitted.
About Anthony McGill, clarinet
Hailed for his “trademark brilliance, penetrating sound and rich character” (New York Times), clarinetist Anthony McGill enjoys a dynamic international solo and chamber music career and is principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic – the first African-American principal player in the organization's history. He is the recipient of the 2020 Avery Fisher Prize, one of classical music’s most significant awards.
McGill appears as a soloist with top orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, and the Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, and Detroit Symphony Orchestras. He performed alongside Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Gabriela Montero at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, premiering a piece by John Williams. As a chamber musician, McGill is a collaborator of the Brentano, Daedalus, Guarneri, JACK, Miró, Pacifica, Shanghai, Takács, and Tokyo Quartets, and performs with leading artists including Emanuel Ax, Inon Barnatan, Gloria Chien, Yefim Bronfman, Gil Shaham, Midori, Mitsuko Uchida, and Lang Lang.
He serves on the faculty of The Juilliard School and is the Artistic Director for Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program. He holds the William R. and Hyunah Yu Brody Distinguished Chair at the Curtis Institute of Music.

Anna Polonsky, in high demand as a soloist and chamber musician, has appeared with the Moscow Virtuosi, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Memphis Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, and has collaborated with the Guarneri, Orion, Daedalus, and Shanghai Quartets, and with such musicians as Mitsuko Uchida, Yo-Yo Ma, Richard Goode, Emanuel Ax, Arnold Steinhardt, as well as clarinetist David Shifrin and cellist Peter Wiley with whom she also performs as a trio. Her chamber festival appearances include Marlboro, Chamber Music Northwest, Seattle, Music@Menlo, Cartagena, Bard, and Caramoor, as well as at Bargemusic in New York City, and her concert appearances have occurred in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Vienna Konzerthaus, Alice Tully Hall, and Carnegie Hall’s Stern, Weill, and Zankel Halls. Ms. Polonsky has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Anna has been a member of the Chamber Music Society Two as a frequent guest at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, taken part in the European Broadcasting Union’s 2006 project to record and broadcast all of Mozart’s keyboard sonatas, and in the spring of 2007, inaugurated the Emerson Quartet’s Perspectives Series with a solo recital at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium. She is a recipient of a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award.
Ms. Polonsky made her solo piano debut at the age of seven at the Special Central Music School in Moscow, Russia, emigrated to the United States in 1990, and attended high school at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. She received her Bachelor of Music diploma from The Curtis Institute of Music under the tutelage of the renowned pianist Peter Serkin and continued her studies with Jerome Lowenthal, earning her Master’s Degree from the Juilliard School. In addition to performing, Ms. Polonsky is a piano faculty member at Vassar College and the Marlboro and Kneisel Hall chamber music festivals.
