Emanating from 17th-century Italy, the 'fantastical style' (stylus phantasticus) of music was taken up in the courts and chapels of Germany and Austria. These ancient songs sprung from a dark time and speak of hope to our contemporary situation. This concert features EMV's 2021 Artist-in-Residence, acclaimed baritone Jonathan Adams, and violinist Chloe Kim who was named as one of Canada's top '30 under 30' by CBC in 2020

About Jonathon Adams, baritone
Born in amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton, Alberta), Jonathon Adams is a Cree-Métis baritone. They have appeared as a soloist with Philippe Herreweghe, Sigiswald Kuijken, Vox Luminis, Servir Antico, and B'Rock Orchestra at Opera-Ballet Flanders. In 2021, Jonathon was named the first ever artist-in-residence at Early Music Vancouver. They are also featured in the film MESSIAH/COMPLEX created by Against the Grain Theatre and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

About Margaret Little, viola da gamba
Margaret Little discovered the viola da gamba at the age of eleven at the CAMMAC Lake MacDonald Music Centre and instantly fell in love with the instrument and Early Music repertoire. She founded the viola da gamba ensemble Les Voix humaines with her friend Susie Napper over 25 years ago. She has performed on the viol and baroque viola on all five continents with various ensembles and as a soloist, and has recorded over 80 albums. Margaret Little teaches the viola da gamba and baroque ensembles at the Université de Montréal.
