Closing Festival Concert: Alsop conducts Clyne & Beethoven

The 2022 National Orchestral Institute + Festival closes with the four most famous notes in music history—the opening of Beethoven's perennial fifth symphony. Guest conducting with Maestra Alsop is Taki Alsop Conducting Fellow Anna Duczmal-Mróz, leading the NOI Philharmonic in Vivian Fung's Earworms, a feisty and whimsical orchestral piece that provides a commentary on today’s world. The Taki Alsop Fellowship mentors, supports, and promotes women conductors as they advance in their professional careers. The fellowship has provided intensive coaching, mentorship and financial support to aspiring female conductors. Today, all 30 recipients are working to ensure a more equitable future for classical music through their artistry and advocacy; among them they hold 19 music director or chief conductor positions of orchestras around the world. As part of NOI+F 2022, two Taki Alsop recipients will be in residence throughout the summer.
Celebrated for providing fresh insights into the classic cello repertoire and for championing contemporary works of living composers, cellist Inbal Segev joins Maestra Alsop and the NOI Philharmonic in Anna Clyne's DANCE for cello and orchestra. The five movement work is based on poetry by 13th-century Persian poet Rumi. The festival finale culminates with Beethoven's fifth symphony, a timeless depiction of the composer's tumultuous struggle with fate and triumphant resolve that has come to epitomize the heroism of his time period and that of future generations.

This event is part of the National Orchestral Institute + Festival (NOI+F), a program of The Clarice at the University of Maryland. NOI+F trains aspiring orchestral musicians, composers, conductors and arts administrators from across the country in a month of dynamic music-making and professional exploration. Trailblazing conductor Marin Alsop was appointed as the first-ever Music Director of the National Orchestral Institute + Festival in 2020. In addition to conducting innovative programs onstage at The Clarice and at Wolf Trap, Maestra Alsop launched the NOI+F Conducting Academy for rising young conductors in 2021. In 2015, NOI+F began a partnership with Naxos to record one concert of all-American music each year—Naxos' first partnership with a summer festival of its kind. The 2019 recording Ruggles, Stucky, Harbison received a Grammy nomination in the "Best Orchestral Performance" category.
