Whidbey Island Center for the Arts (WICA), Langley, WA, United States

For six-days, orchestra conductors from all parts of the world will be in residence at the fifth annual Pacific Northwest Conducting Institute held August 8-13. Internationally acclaimed conductor, lecturer and composer, Diane Wittry, will be leading the conducting sessions along with Dr. Anna Edwards, music director of Whidbey’s Saratoga Orchestra.

The culmination of the workshop will be a Summer Festival Concert held on Saturday, August 13, 2pm at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts. PNWCI's 2022 Conducting Fellows will lead the Saratoga Orchestra in a program to include Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3, Op. 56 "Scottish"; Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, with Seattle Symphony violinist Brittany Boulding; Florence Price's Andante Cantabile from String Quartet No. 2; and Louise Farrenc's Overture No. 2, Op. 24.

A pre-concert chat with the participating conductors will begin at 1:15pm.

In an effort to align our concert attendance policy with the new Washington State guidelines, we will no longer be checking vaccination cards upon entry. The wearing of masks is encouraged but not mandatory.

About Saratoga Orchestra of Whidbey Island

Whidbey's Saratoga Orchestra formed as an expansion of the Saratoga Chamber Players founded by Whidbey Island's legendary violinist and arts supporter, Michael Nutt. Previously known as Saratoga Chamber Orchestra, the name is derived from the beautiful Saratoga Passage that flanks the east side of Whidbey Island and the stand of trees known as the Saratoga Woods. In 2007, Legh W. Burns, Music Director Emeritus, began a regular concert series performing throughout the island for Whidbey audiences. Dr. Anna Edwards has led the orchestra as Music Director since 2015, and has brought national attention to the ensemble for its innovative programming championing women, BIPOC and underrepresented composers and hosting the highly esteemed Pacific Northwest Conducting Institute held each summer.
