"The only positive thing about the pandemic is I can celebrate my 65th birthday when I’m actually turning 67" – Wayne Horvitz.

Wayne Horvitz is a composer, pianist and electronic musician who has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. He is the leader of the Gravitas Quartet, Sweeter Than the Day, Zony Mash, The Four plus One Ensemble, and co-founder of the New York Composers Orchestra. He has performed and collaborated with Bill Frisell, Butch Morris, John Zorn, George Lewis, Robin Holcomb, Fred Frith, Julian Priester, Michael Shrieve, and Carla Bley, among others. Commissioners include the NEA, Meet the Composer, Kronos String Quartet, Seattle Chamber Players, BAM, and Earshot Jazz. Collaborators include Paul Taylor, Liz Lerman, Bill Irwin and Gus Van Sant. He is the music programmer for The Royal Room, and a professor of composition at the Cornish College of the Arts.

The Royal We first started as the informal late-night group at the Royal Room lounge. The music places an emphasis on individual and ensemble improvisation, and emerges from motifs and compositions by Wayne Horvitz as well as inspirations from African pop music, 60’s modal jazz and open improvisational forms. With a rapport of weekly sessions, the group members share a long time standing with each other and the in-formalness of their culmination makes for spontaneous music and a unique openness.

Featuring: Hans Teuber; Peggy Lee; Ivan Galvez; D’Vonne Lewis; Geoff Harper; Wayne Horvitz

Robin Holcomb and Peggy Lee have collaborated since 2006 on a variety of projects composed by Robin Holcomb. Both distinctive composers and fierce improvisers, they have been featured performers at the Vancouver Jazz Festival, the PuSH Festival, the Royal Room and the Chapel Performance Space in Seattle. The duo is currently recording their multifaceted repertoire: compositions extended by improvisation, songs and settings of the poetry of Nazim Hikmet. Their music explores a wide territory – from contemporary classical to folk to free jazz and beyond.

Extended Trio is Brad Webb on drums, Matt Booth on bass, and Oscar Rossignoli on piano. All of them compose for the group, and with the particular musical personalities of the group foremost in mind. They each draw on their disparate life experiences – Oscar Rossignoli (piano) grew up in Honduras, Brad Webb (drums) in South Louisiana, and Matt Booth (bass) outside Washington, DC. They began playing together in the boil pot of the New Orleans music scene in 2016.

COVID-19 Protocols: All Royal Room staff are fully vaccinated, and we ask that our patrons be vaccinated as well. Our staff will be masked, and we encourage our audience to wear masks as much as possible.
