Antonio Rey, one of the leading flamenco guitarists of Spain today will be playing two nights in Salem Oregon, at Willamette University's Hudson Hall . Antonio was awarded the 2020 Latin Grammy for best flamenco album entitled Flamenco sin Fronteras, featuring several collaborations with top artists in Spain including Pablo Alborán. Rey's playing, known for his impeccable technique and fiery interpretations of flamenco's intricate rhythms, has been described by El País as “more than brilliant”, “excellent” by The Guardian and "the next Paco de Lucia" by Julio Martí.

Antonio Rey was born in Madrid to a family deep in flamenco tradition and his career began at the age of ten alongside his father, also a flamenco guitarist. He was soon performing on international stages and winning prestigious awards for his incredible virtuosity, such as the Premio Nacional de Guitarra (also won by Paco de Lucia and Vicente Amigo), National Competition of the Art of Flamenco of Córdoba, Niño Ricardo National Competition of Flamenco Guitar, International Flamenco Guitar Competition of Jerez, and others. He has performed with many of the most important flamenco artists, such as the late great Paco de Lucia, Grammy-winning vocalist Diego El Cigala, dancer Joaquín Cortes, guitarist Diego del Morao, Grammy nominee Estrella Morente, and has recently been touring with bass legend Richard Bona. Rey has performed in prestigious concert halls around the world including Tokyo, Moscow, Tehran, and across Latin America and Europe.

This will be the first flamenco concert of its kind to happen in Salem. The show will also feature a special appearance of artists from the Pacific Northwest, including: Lamiae Naki (voice), Nat Hulskamp (guitar), Laura Onizuka (dance) & Mario Diaz (guitar).

Antonio Rey Navas is a Spanish flamenco guitarist and composer. He is a winner of several national and international flamenco guitar competitions including the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba (National Competition of the Art of Flamenco of Córdoba), the Concurso Nacional de Guitarra Flamenca Niño Ricardo (Niño Ricardo National Competition of Flamenco Guitar), and the Concurso Internacional de Guitarra Flamenca Los Cernícalos de Jerez (International Flamenco Guitar Competition in Kestrels, Jerez).

About Mario Diaz, guitar

Mario Díaz is a guitarist, singer, audio engineer, and educator whose musical activities have taken him across the U.S. and South America. A member of the Oregon Guitar Quartet, he has also performed with Portland Opera, 45th Parallel, Fear No Music and Third Angle New Music. He is a faculty member at Portland State University and Portland Community College, Director of the PSU Guitar Series, and head of the guitar program at Young Musicians & Artists. Mario also maintains a private teaching studio in Portland and serves as a clinician and adjudicator across the region.

Díaz's work as a soloist and collaborator crosses over into a wide range of genres and styles, from classical to rock. He has participated in three tours and two Idaho residencies with the Dave Eggar Band and has recorded with Pink Martini, the von Trapps, and Martin Zarzar. During his time at Allegro Media Group, Mario engineered and mastered over 300 recordings. In addition to teaching in the guitar program at PSU, he is a faculty member in the university's groundbreaking Sonic Arts and Music Production program.

Mario holds degrees from San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Portland State University, where he studied with composer/guitarists Bryan Johanson and Sergio Assad. When not making music, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.
