Explore the themes of sonic and emotional transformation in an hour-long set of contemporary duos performed by Michelle Huang, piano and Erin Wight, viola.
The Seattle-based viola and piano duo presents an intriguing program exploring the idea of transformation through the works of Armenian-American composer Mary Kouyoumdjian, Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad, British-American composer Rebecca Clarke, and Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. These composers' works approach the concept of transformation from different angles. Some troubling and challenging, some joyful and transcendent, some wandering and searching and at last finding comfort.

A native of Taiwan, pianist Michelle Huang has performed and taught extensively throughout the U.S. as well as abroad in the Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland, China, and Taiwan. She has appeared as soloist and guest artist in numerous recitals and has given lectures, workshops, and master classes. As a chamber musician, Michelle Huang has collaborated frequently with vocalists and instrumentalists as well as various chamber groups, such as the Mary L’Engle Ensemble; the River City Trio, the chamber group-in-residence at Friday Musicale in Jacksonville, Florida; the Jacksonville Symphony; and Richmond Symphony musicians.

Violist Erin Wight, a Midwestern transplant to New York City, is an active chamber musician and avid performer of new music. Described by the NY Times as “engrossing” and “surehanded,” she performs frequently as a member of the Red Light New Music Ensemble and Either/Or, has played with Talea, Signal, the Wordless Music Orchestra, the New Juilliard Ensemble, Axiom, the Juilliard Electric Ensemble, FiRE, and worked closely with members of the Ensemble Modern and Ensemble Intercontemporain. In addition, Ms. Wight is a founding member of the Toomai String Quintet, 2007 winners of the 92nd St. Y’s Music Unlocked! competition for emerging ensembles dedicated to educational outreach. Ms. Wight is deeply committed to community engagement and is on the teaching artist faculty of the New York Philharmonic’s School Partnership Program and the Weill Institute at Carnegie Hall. Ms. Wight completed her Master of Music degree at The Juilliard School where she studied with Paul Neubauer.
