In this poignant program, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra brings to life key works by Brazilian composers that focus on the Amazonian landscape as a centerpiece of Brazilian identity. Since its first concert in 1954, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra has become an inseparable part of São Paulo and Brazilian culture, promoting deep cultural and social transformation. "Floresta Villa-Lobos" is a continuation of this journey, taking the opportunity to bring works written from and about the ecology of Brazil to the rest of the world.

Marin Alsop has a deep, long-standing relationship with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, serving as its Music Director from 2013-2020. She is now the Conductor of Honour, working in tandem with the orchestra to bring this distinct and timely program to the stage. Alsop will be back on familiar ground at Strathmore as she will soon assume the title of Music Director Laureate for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, after an outstanding 14-year tenure as its Music Director.
