Takohachi, established in 2007, is a Portland-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Since its inception, Takohachi has become multi-faceted with many projects, but its objectives remain the same: to introduce Japanese culture through music.

Takohachi X (aka. TakoX "TakoTen") is one of the projects by the founding director, Yumi Torimaru. It’s a Japanese multi-instrumental duo with Kohei Kimura. The two amazing talents collaborate to take hands-on yet another step up for the Takohachi organization to bring Japanese culture and Takohachi originality to our communities.

Yumi and Kohei have performed hundreds of shows in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Texas, and Japan. That lead Takohachi to enter the Internet Shinobue (bamboo flute) Contest 2019. Takohachi became the first ever overseas champion for the competition, culminating in a Tokyo performance in December 2019. Yumi also won 1st place at Bachido Cup, an online Tsugaru Shamisen contest in 2021.

In this informal, lunch hour performance TakoX will present a program to introduce several different Japanese traditional instruments, including tsugaru shamisen, taiko drum, shinobue Japanese bamboo flute, and shakuhachi
