Known to Phillips audiences as a composer who has engaged deeply with paintings in our permanent collection by Jacob Lawrence and Whitfield Lovell through new commissioned works, Nathalie Joachim makes her performance debut at the Phillips with violinist and collaborator Yvonne Lam. Lam and Joachim perform solo and duo works from Joachim's catalogue and those of her contemporaries: Allison Loggins-Hull and Valerie Coleman.

Joachim performs Loggins-Hull’s powerfully wrought solo flute work Homeland, a piece that evokes the pain and remembrance of women lost to police violence. Lam performs Joachim's Watch Over Us for violin and electronics, which draws inspiration from the documentary film Two Gods by Zeshawn Ali. Joachim and Lam collaborate on selections from Joachim’s song cycle Ki moun ou ye (Who are you), a new work that explores recurrent themes in Joachim’s compositional style: Haitian heritage and ancestry, the cultural reverberations of ritual practice, and concepts of place and identity.
