Antonín Dvořák — Selected works

Coming from an impoverished rural family and struggling for many years to achieve recognition, the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák achieved great international success through his immense talent, determination, and hard work. Dvořák was prolific in almost all genres of musical art, but it was in chamber music that he achieved his most extraordinary position among major composers of his time.

Highlighting and celebrating Dvořák’s chamber works, we are proud to present our "Dvořák Festival: Prague to Portland" featuring award-winning Czech ensemble Marinů Quartet with guest artists Karel Košárek, piano; Hannah Penn, mezzo-soprano; and Kenji Bunch, viola. Throughout the festival, there will be five concerts, plus free community events such as lectures, film screenings, an open rehearsal, pre-concert talk, masterclass, and a panel discussion!

About Martinů Quartet

The Martinů Quartet, originally the Havlák Quartet, was formed in 1976 by the then students of the Prague Conservatoire, inspired by and modelled on such string quartets as the Vlach and the Smetana. They went on to win at important international competitions such as the ARD Munich (Germany), Evian (France), Yehudi Menuhin (Portsmouth, Britain) and The Prague Spring competitions. This recognition proved to be just the beginning of the Quartet’s brilliant international career, placing it firmly in the internationally respected Czech string quartet tradition. Breathtaking musicality and rounded, flawless teamwork are hallmarks of the Martinů Quartet.
