- Kenny Broberg, piano
Ludwig van Beethoven — Piano Sonata No. 26 in E-flat major, Op. 81a "Les Adieux"
Amy Beach — Ballade, Op. 6
Nikolai Medtner — Piano Sonata No. 7, Op. 25, No. 2 "The Night Wind"
Hailed as a pianist capable of "pulling a palette of moods from every register" (Indianapolis Star), Kenny Broberg will captivate Portland audiences with a wide-ranging program of audience favorites and hidden treasures.
Both rapturous and melancholic, Franck's Prelude, Fugue, and Variation in B minor offers listeners an emotional sweep that belies the work's formal title, while Beethoven's "Les adieux" Sonata — written during Napoleon's brutal 1809 invasion of Vienna — charts an emotional odyssey from pain and longing to fervent joy. Amy Beach's Ballade showcases the composer's knack for brilliant pianistic color, and Nikolai Medtner's "Night Wind" Sonata conjurs a relentless frenzy of menacing, nightmarish music that tests the performer's physical and expressive limits.
