Since pianist Michelle Cann made her orchestral debut at age fourteen, she has maintained a remarkable career as a performer, educator, and advocate. She has performed as soloist with numerous orchestras including The Philadelphia Orchestra and The Cleveland Orchestra and has appeared at notable venues including the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the Kennedy Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Barbican. She received the 2022 Sphinx Medal of Excellence, and in 2019 she served as the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's MAC Music Innovator.

Cann brings a dance-themed program to the Phillips that includes Maurice Ravel's La Valse and Franz Liszt's Mephisto Waltz. She will also present Fantasies No. 2 and No. 4 by Florence Price, the first African-American woman to have had symphonic works performed by a major orchestra. Price's music is now experiencing a long overdue revival thanks to the efforts of Cann and other champions.
