Yannick Nézet-Séguin performs both as conductor and pianist with The Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble. The program opens with Metamorphosen, written by R. Strauss in his later years. Interpretations of its title and thematic content arouse great debate—is it an abstract, purely musical study as its title suggests, or shall we read autobiographical clues?—but what remains certain is its absolute transportive power upon listeners. The second half of the concert comprises Brahms's Piano Quintet, widely regarded as a chamber music masterpiece.
