Kerensa Briggs — Selected works (solo organ work TBA)

Join us for a world premiere choral concert of father-daughter duo David & Kerensa Briggs, entitled A Festival of Psalms. Janet Yieh will conduct this forty-five minute choral psalm setting, featuring David Briggs on organ, The Choir & Choristers of Heavenly Rest, Members of the Canterbury Choral Society, and Brass Quintet & Percussion.

The forty-five minute collection of psalms was commissioned by The Church of the Heavenly Rest, with psalm selections by The Rev. Matthew Heyd, rector, and Bishop-Elect of the Diocese of New York.

The event will open with a Q&A with the composers and Kent Tritle, Director of Cathedral Music and Organist at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and organist for the New York Philharmonic. The world premiere performance of the work will follow, and will be conducted by Janet Yieh, Director of Music at The Church of the Heavenly Rest. David Briggs, composer and award winning organist, will accompany on the organ. Briggs will also play two solo organ pieces composed by David & Kerensa at our 8,000 pipe, 137-rank Austin Organ. His hands and feet will be broadcast to the audience to watch him work at the instrument.

Briggs recently debuted his world premiere of Stabat Mater at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where he is currently Artist-in-Residence.

About Music at Church of the Heavenly Rest

At Church of the Heavenly Rest, music draws us into service and inspires us in many ways. Whether you love to sing or are looking for family friendly activities and concerts in the neighborhood, we have a program for you and would love for you to join us!

Our 30-voice Adult Choir is a combined group of volunteer singers and talented section leaders, singing every Sunday morning and for special services including Christmas Eve, Holy Week, and Easter.

Children in our Age 4-Grade 12 chorister programs learn to sing, build rhythm and music literacy, and develop a meaningful sense of community. During the school year, chorister programs run from September through May, and we offer an August Choir and Arts Camp for rising 2nd-8th graders.

Our handbell choir includes those of all levels of experience who enjoy playing as part of an ensemble.

Heavenly Rest's magnificent 137-rank Austin Pipe Organ has over 8000 pipes, making it one of the largest in Manhattan.

Summer Evening Jazz Vespers take place in June and July.

We present mainstage Concerts with a Cause performances each season featuring classical, choral, jazz, and Broadway musicians. Each concert benefits one of our partner organizations here in New York City.
