IN Series presents the first U.S. staging since its premiere in 1995 of John Adams' seminal operatic song play I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky. The opera made history as it depicted events of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, by its searing, compassionate, and prescient exploration of broken justice and migration systems, police violence against young Black men, family border separation and the impossible situation of illegal refugees in America living in fear of INS/ICE, the autonomy of women's bodies, the full expression of gender and sexual identity, complex racial bigotries against Asian American and Pacific Islanders, and the truth of intersectional identities – all the issues of 30 years ago with which we remarkably grapple even more today.
