Skagit Valley Chorale is excited to be preparing for a pair of spring concerts taking place once again at Mcintyre Hall in Mount Vernon on May 6 and 7. A string quartet will add a sonorous accompaniment to our choral sound on pieces like Gabriel Fare's Cantique de Jean Racine, Johann Sebastian Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, and Aaron Copland's rousing old American song, Zion's Walls. Newer favorites will include Eric Whitacre's passionate Five Hebrew Love Songs and the angelic, soaring composition by superstar Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, The Ground, which will also feature our piano accompanist Peter Garbes. Our choristers will be polishing up their foreign-language diction as we work on pieces in French, Latin, Hebrew, and even Estonian for the anthemic Ta lendab mesipuu poole. We'll also be honored to premiere a special commission from Dr. Giselle Wyers, Professor of Choral Music at the University of Washington and a well-respected composer. Dr. Wyers has composed a new string quartet accompaniment for her existing choral setting of the Theodore Roethke poem, The Waking, which tells of a delightful summer stroll out in nature, and the Skagit Valley Chorale is proud to be presenting the premiere of this arrangement in our May concerts.
