Midtown Concerts: Ekmeles Vocal Ensemble

This will be the first recreation of Carlo Gesualdo's notorious music in competing authentic tunings of his time. Aside from Nicola Vicentino's complicated arcicembalo, other written testimonies by Gesualdo's musicians implicate that he composed according to a common lute's meantone temperament. Audiences may hear that the prince went out of tune to express himself after killing his wife and her lover.

About ekmeles

ekmeles is a vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance of new and rarely-heard works, and gems of the historical avant garde. With a special focus on microtonal works, the ensemble has been praised by The New York Times for its "extraordinary sense of pitch". Fanfare Magazine said the ensemble's performances were "beyond expert — almost frightening in their precision".
