For his Roulette commission, Lester St. Louis presents METAHAVEN, a new evening-length work for string trio, trumpet, and electronics. A work formed off of building blocks of extensive instrumental and electronic improvisation; compounding sounds atop each other as loops, pads, beats and fragments all composed as a kind of overview of his musical practice. "I want METAHAVEN to function as a cutting room floor for assembling of all the varying aspects of my artistic life," says St. Louis. "Instrumental music, improvisation, developing extended techniques, dance music, electronic music, ambience, and space making. A kind of meta curatorial act for myself about construction."
The piece will feature Josh Modney (Violin), Carrie Frey (Viola), Mariel Roberts (Cello) and HxH; the electroacoustic duo of St. Louis and trumpeter/composer Chris Williams.
A livestream will be available free of charge at 8pm on the day of the performance and archived for future viewing.
About Josh Modney, violin
Josh Modney is a violinist and creative musician working at the nexus of composition, improvisation, and interpretation. About Mariel Roberts, cello
American cellist Mariel Roberts is widely recognized not just for her virtuosic performances which seethe with "excruciating intensity" (The Whole Note), but as a "fearless explorer" in her field (Chicago Reader). Her ravenous appetite for collaboration and experimentation as an interpreter, improvisor, and composer have helped create a body of work which bridges avant-garde, contemporary, classical, improvised, and traditional music.

HxH is the improvisatory electro-acoustic duo of Lester St. Louis and Chris Williams. The duo utilizes a mix of trumpet, cello and electronics to build worlds traversing through acoustic sound, grainy textures, expansive pools of sounds, breaks, cuts and beats. The approach is conceived as an expansiveness that holds a personal intimacy. HxH wants to bring the listeners in, tune them to the experience and take a long trip. HxH functions as a vehicle to bring together the mass of references and influences Chris and Lester share and create ways to crystalize those ideas in real, expanded time to an experience over minutes or hours.
