In-person: $48 |
As the snowflakes swirl, so do the rhythms of Celtic dance music, warming the heart and lifting the spirits. Helicon returns to Dumbarton this year with its annual Winter Solstice program. From Scotland to the hills of Kentucky, and from French Canada back to the Irish homeland, music of the Celtic diaspora captivates all who hear. Helicon and its fearless leader Ken Kolodner bring their bright and festive program back to our historic stage. This holiday favorite program for the folk and bluegrass enthusiast will leave you tapping your toe, swaying in your seat, and carrying the holiday glow back to your home.
Robin Bullock, guitar, cittern, fiddle, mandolin, & piano
Ken Kolodner, hammered dulcimer, & fiddle
Chris Norman, wooden flute, whistle, & smallpipes
The INDIE Award-winning world-folk trio Helicon began life as the duo of Chris Norman and Ken Kolodner in the early 1980s. A fortuitous meeting at a festival added the prodigious talents of Robin Bullock in 1986, and Helicon was officially born. The group soon became one of a number of ensembles who were at the forefront of expanding the boundaries of traditional music in the U.S. and exploring the genre of what later became known as “world music.” Combining diverse musical backgrounds and interests, Helicon’s mission became the interpretation of traditional folk music from around the world.https://robinbullock.com/bands-duos/
About Robin Bullock, acoustic guitar, mandolin, & cittern
Hailed as a “Celtic guitar god” by Baltimore City Paper and “one of the best folk instrumentalists in the business” by Sing Out! Magazine, Robin Bullock is one of the preeminent acoustic music masters of our time.
His virtuosity on guitar, cittern and mandolin blends the ancient melodies of the Celtic lands, their vigorous American descendants, and the masterworks of the Baroque and Renaissance eras into one powerful musical vision. The 17th-century harp tunes of legendary Irish bard Turlough O’Carolan, the spirited jigs and reels of rural Ireland, the haunting ballads of the southern Appalachians and the timeless compositions of Bach, Dowland and Francesco da Milano all find a musical common ground in Robin’s music, where lightning-fast fingerwork one moment is perfectly balanced with tender, quiet intimacy the next. A warm, friendly presence onstage, Robin effortlessly creates a magical world for the audience with his multi-instrumental wizardry, taking them on an unforgettable journey into the deep heart’s core and through the music of the spheres.https://robinbullock.com/bio/
