Ana López-Reyes (NNUX)Helix (world premiere)

Join Unheard-of//Ensemble and the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club on the water for the third concert in the Cultural Ecologies series on September 23rd at 7pm (6:30pm canoe launch) at the Gowanus Dredgers Bunker at 2 19th Street, Brooklyn. They present the world premiere of a 30-minute multimedia commission from composer NNUX (Ana López-Reyes), recent recipient Alarm Will Sound's Matt Marks Impact Fund, and video artist Martha Maya.

Helix is a piece that simulates a spiral from pre-Hispanic to contemporary times, contemplating the cycles and inheritance in women's collective trauma, which has determined the ways we've been shaped as individuals through generations. NNUX and Martha Maya's work looks at the breaking of cycles in women's generational collective trauma. Helix explores their backgrounds and relationships with this trauma, and how femicide impacts Latinx communities around the world. Musically, the piece will also explore the idea of these sonic loops that gradually change and break. NNUX and Martha Maya will join the ensemble for the premiere. NNUX will perform an opening set of her electronic music.

About Cultural Ecologies Series

Unheard-of Ensemble, in collaboration with the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club, has launched its newest performance series, Cultural Ecologies, an immersive set of multimedia concerts utilizing Brooklyn's own Gowanus Canal as our stage. This planned four-show series features world premieres and cutting edge pieces by artists exploring stories of climate change, technology's impact on our mental health, racial violence, and feminism presented in a setting that brings people closer together in an open and adventurous way. The Gowanus Canal, one of the America's most well known superfund sites is now undergoing vital transformation not only in the clean up and rehabilitation efforts carried out by the EPA but also culturally by bringing people closer to one of New York's most historically important waterways. These free performances will take place at the Gowanus Dredgers Bunker as well as their paddle-in movie location (both ADA accessible). The audience will be able to attend the performance either via canoe (reserved in advance via donation to the Dredgers), sitting on one of the Dredgers' new docks, or on shore via an accessible location. Each performance opens with a talk given by members of the Dredgers about their work in the Canal.
