Named in honor of Leonard Jacobsen, former chair of the piano department at Puget Sound, the Jacobsen Professional Artist Series was established in 1984 and features School of Music faculty and their guests. Ticket sales support the Jacobsen Series Scholarship Fund, which awards annual music scholarships to an outstanding member of Sigma Alpha Iota, international music fraternity.

About Dawn Padula, mezzo-soprano

Dawn Padula, mezzo-soprano is a versatile performer of opera, oratorio, musical theatre, jazz, and classical concert repertoire. Opera roles include Carmen (Carmen), Azucena (Il Trovatore), Lady Jane (Patience 2018 Gregory Awards People’s Choice Award Nominee), Lady Blanche (Princess Ida), Ruth (The Pirates of Penzance), Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Meg (Falstaff), The Third Lady (The Magic Flute), the Witch (Hansel and Gretel), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Isabella (The Italian Girl in Algiers), Erika (Vanessa), and the Sorceress (Dido and Aeneas). In the Pacific Northwest, she has performed with Tacoma Opera, Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Kitsap Opera, Concert Opera of Seattle, PLU’s Jazz Under the Stars, Puget Sound Concert Opera, the Tacoma Concert Band, the Oregon Symphony, the Portland Symphonic Choir, the Seattle Bach Choir, the Second City Chamber Series, Classical Tuesdays in Old Town Tacoma Concert Series, Lakewood Playhouse, and Opera Pacifica. With Seattle Opera, she is a member of the Supplementary Chorus. In June 2017, she toured to Varna and Sofia, Bulgaria as the mezzo-soprano soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with the Pazardzhik Symphony. In August 2017, she released her debut classical solo album, Gracious Moonlight, featuring Dominick Argento’s Pulitzer Prize winning song cycle, From the Diary of Virginia Woolf. Dr. Padula is currently the Director of Vocal Studies at the University of Puget Sound School of Music.

About Brian Smith, drums

Brian Smith, co-founder of the jazz-fusion quartet Velocity, first displayed an interest in playing drums in his early teens. He veered off the music course until his late-twenties when he once again became inspired to create and play music. With this decision he began his 7-year apprenticeship studying with master drummer and teacher Garey Williams. Under Garey's tutelage, Brian became well versed in multiple music styles with a focus in jazz and contemporary music. Brian's education and dedication to music has allowed him to play a vast variety of music genres around the Puget Sound area including top 40 tours, several jazz bebop combos, R&B groups, country bands, and original music projects. Brian's solid grooves, feather-lite touch, and interpretive style have made him a favorite with many local area musicians. Brian helped create Velocity to showcase his creative concepts in composition, arrangement, and music artistry. His collaborations with Peter Adams have produced a unique blend of music fusing together influences from contemporary jazz, funk, latin, and progressive rock styles. Brian continues to test his knowledge and skill set to further learn and master his craft.
