Opening our 20th Anniversary season and to honor 400 years since the death of our namesake, William Byrd, this program features a world premiere commissioned by the Byrd Ensemble. The new work, by American composer Nico Muhly, is based on Byrd's motet, Ne irascaris, Domine.
The program also features other favorites by Byrd and his contemporaries and will conclude with a performance of Tallis's monumental 40-part motet, Spem in alium.
This program will receive 2 in-person performances:
- Saturday, October 21, 1pm at St. James Cathedral in Seattle
- Sunday, October 22, 8pm at St. Mary Magdalene Parish (The Madeleine) in Portland
It will also be recorded and streamed online October 28-November 12, 2023.
We are excited to be presented by Portland-based choral ensemble, In Medio, for our program on Sunday, October 22 at 3pm. The program will open with a performance by In Medio and will combine forces for a performance of Tallis's Spem in alium. (Nico Muhly will not be present for this performance).

In Medio is a choral community of accomplished young-adult singers who make brave, relevant, and thoughtful music for everyone.
The name of the choir, In Medio, is Latin for "in the midst." It is a reference to the process of creating something together and honors the importance of change. The best times in life are often when we are in the middle of something—be it a long-term project, a vacation, surrounded by friends and family, or in the middle of a choir. It's the moment in which you forget the beginning and are not far enough along to see the end.
