The newly restored 1924 German-Jewish silent film The City Without Jews is performed with live original music from klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals (who was a founding member of the Klezmatics) and pianist Donald Sosin. Based on the century-old best-selling novel by Hugo Bettauer, the film was a satire of something unimaginable at the time. It is darkly comedic, with eerily realistic sequences, such as the shots of freight trains transporting Jews out of the city.
