About Gateways Chamber Orchestra

The Gateways Chamber Players, an ensemble of the Gateways Music Festival, features some of the nation’s leading classical musicians in a performance of Igor Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale Suite and Wynton Marsalis’s A Fiddler’s Tale. The ensemble makes its Kilbourn Hall (Rochester) and Carnegie Hall (New York City) debuts in October 2023, Kennedy Center (Washington, DC) debut in February 2024 and Pick-Staiger Concert Hall (Evanston/Chicago) debut in April 2024.

Featuring violinist and Avery Fisher Career Grant winner Tai Murray, described by The Philadelphia Inquirer as a musician of “exceptional assurance and style,” the all-star ensemble includes Monica Ellis (bassoon) of the Imani Winds, Weston Sprott (trombone) and Billy Hunter (trumpet) of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Jauvon Gilliam (timpani) of the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington, DC performance), Wesley Sumpter (percussion) formerly a Los Angeles Philharmonic fellow (Rochester, New York City, and Chicago performances), Patricia Weitzel (double bass) of the Columbus Symphony (GA), and Alexander Laing (clarinet) formerly of The Phoenix Symphony.

The Chamber Players is thrilled to welcome guest artist Phylicia Rashad, Tony Award-winning actress and dean of the Chadwick A. Boseman School of Fine Arts at Howard University as A Fiddler’s Tale narrator along with multi-genre award-winning pianist, vocalist, composer Damien Sneed as conductor.

About Angelica Hairston, harp

Renowned as a harpist, educator, and change-maker, Angelica Hairston's mastery of the harp and commitment to equity position her as an internationally-coveted artist. She serves as a 2023 Artist in Residence at Palm Heights Resort in Grand Cayman and is a recipient of the Sphinx Organization's prestigious MPower Artist Grant; granting her the invitation to perform and conduct groundbreaking research at the distinguished University of Ghana, Accra.

An Atlanta-based harpist whose influence extends across continents and cultures, Angelica has performed concertos alongside esteemed orchestras including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Montgomery Symphony, and the Daytona Solisti Chamber Orchestra, along with performances at the International Harp Academy of the Pacific in Vancouver, Canada and the Judith Liber Harp Academy in Lake Como, Italy. With years of intensive artistic training, Angelica is a recipient of From the Top's Jack Kent Cooke Award and an alum of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Talent Development Program.

About Marianne Henry, violin

Violinist Marianne Henry has toured extensively as a founding member of the Marian Anderson String Quartet. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Ms. Henry holds a Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in violin performance, from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. She received a second Master’s degree in String Quartet Performance at The Shepherd School of Music in Houston, Texas. Ms. Henry is a devoted teacher of violin and chamber music as well as performer. She has served on the faculties of the Harlem School of the Arts in New York City, New York City College and California State University, Lost Angeles. Ms. Henry has been a soloist on KUSC Radio's Sundays at Four, a features soloist with the List-Glenn Festival Chamber Orchestra, the South-Central Chamber Orchestra and the Afro American Symphony. She has been involved in a myriad of other orchestra work, which includes Phantom of the Opera, the Academy Award Orchestra, and The American Music Awards.
