Evan Johnson — vo mesurando
Evan Johnson — Three in, ad abundantiam ("solo e pensoso")
Georg Friedrich Haas — ....... (US premiere)
Tomás Gueglio — Soap madrigals/Murmuring river (world premiere)
Dan Trueman — Delphica Gaedhlica
Heard here in its US premiere, Georg Friedrich Haas' ....... brings the six voices of the ensemble together with viola. The characteristic sound of the viola's low C string is explored through colorful spectral modulations. Dan Trueman's Delphica Gaedhlica is a Latin, English, and Irish language setting of – and tribute to – Orlando Di Lasso's Prophetia Sybillarum, famous as a chromatic tuning puzzle. Carrie Frey and Giancarlo Latta join the voices on viola and violin respectively.
Zosha Di Castri's We Live the Opposite Daring is a kind of timelapse. It is the second work by the composer for Ekmeles, written 10 years after her first. It also sets texts by Sappho, partially redacted by time and decay.
Tomás Gueglio's Soap madrigals (world premiere) builds on the composer's lyrical style with a further exploration into microtonality, inspired by the repertoire and history of Ekmeles, and the madrigal form. Two small works by Evan Johnson emphasize the particular detail and filigree of the madrigal tradition. vo mesurando and Three in, ad abundantiam ("solo e pensoso") create a fragile and intimate performance space where the music is more overheard than heard, and the collective act of listening becomes as important as the work of the performers.
About ekmeles
ekmeles is a vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance of new and rarely-heard works, and gems of the historical avant garde. With a special focus on microtonal works, the ensemble has been praised by The New York Times for its "extraordinary sense of pitch".
