Sputter Box, a clarinet, voice, and percussion trio, is premiering three works by composers Kevin Kay, Noah Magnus, and Filippo Scaramucci on Monday, December 4, 2023 at 6pm at Scholes Street Studio in Brooklyn.

Sputter Box will perform the first act of the evening-length work, Charlie the Football by Noah Magnus. This work is a satirical musical piece following stereotypical high school trials and tribulations of an animated football, pom-pom, pencil, and can of body spray. duality iii by Kevin Kay is a just intonation piece that creates rhythmic patterns through a detuned bass clarinet, vocal microtones, and sine waves. Vita vana by Filippo Scaramucci uses text from the Italian poet Tito Balestra and features bass clarinet, soprano voice, and bass drum. Along with these three premieres, Sputter Box will perform classic and commissioned works from the trio's repertoire, including Brendan Sweeney's Séance Serenade and Bethany Younge's Doublespeak.

Tickets are $15 in advance or pay-what-you-wish at the door. The concerts will not be livestreamed, but the recordings will be released on Sputter Box's YouTube page as a live premiere at a later date.

A special thanks to Sputter Box's supporters for making this concert possible.

About Sputter Box

A Sputter Box performance is a captivating and unique experience from start to finish. While only a trio (clarinet, voice, percussion), this ensemble can move from "mindfully constructed textures that are light as a feather, and then turn on a dime to explode into something practically orchestral without missing a beat" (Michael Genese). As the pioneers for the unique instrumentation, this New York City based ensemble is committed to building a diverse and exciting repertoire by collaborating with living composers and artists.
