The firebrand Schönberg underwent profound transformation in the Weimar years. Marilyn Nonken, a student of Leonard Stein, the composer's assistant, charts this transformation first from the keyboard, then joined by soprano Deborah Norin-Kuehn for his deeply expressionistic setting of Stefan George's The Book of the Hanging Gardens.
