- Ryo Hasegawa, conductor
Please note: This performance takes place in Washington, DC, not on Johns Hopkins University's Baltimore campus.
For its mid-winter production, Peabody Opera Theatre stages and tours a family-friendly version of Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. In 2022 Peabody commissioned arranger and conductor Nicholas Hersh and librettist Laura Fuentes to update the 19th-century opera version of the German fairy tale, resulting in a roughly 45-minute jazz-orchestration version, in English, wherein siblings Hansel and Gretel navigate living in a city with extreme wealth inequality, but also candy, humor, a brightly costumed witch, and a happy ending. Doctoral conducting candidate Ryo Hasegawa leads the ensemble and Mary Duncan directs this production.
