It is followed by the single-movement symphonic fantasy that Richard Strauss crafted from the "best parts" of his 1919 opera Die Frau ohne Schatten. In Schoenberg's first 12-tone orchestral work—one of his most approachable—the composer showcases what Franz Welser-Möst calls "a new way of writing music in a purely musical way … without any influences from outside music." The program closes with Ravel's La Valse, a remarkably orchestrated work whose extra-musical significance is passionately debated.
