Free (RSVP required)
- Christian Tetzlaff, violin
- Kirill Gerstein, piano
Johannes Brahms — Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108
Thomas Adès — Suite from The Tempest (DC premiere)
György Kurtág — Tre Pezzi, Op. 14e
Béla Bartók — Violin Sonata No. 2, BB 85, Sz. 76
Prepare yourself to witness the conjunction of two musical stars—violinist Christian Tetzlaff and pianist Kirill Gerstein—who will perform a selection of heavy-hitters old and new. From the mature sonatas of Janáček and Brahms to Bartók's second sonata that dates from the same post-WWI era as the Janáček, the pair will play works that perhaps we should explore more often. At the center of the program are two more recent works: the 1979 Tre Pezzi by the luminous mind of György Kurtág, and a regional premiere of a suite from The Tempest conjured by Thomas Adès, who wrote the piece for the duo.
