Acclaimed author and music writer Alex Ross joins the virtuosos of 45th Parallel for an evening of words and music, a unique concert experience that will entertain, edify, enlighten, and exhilarate! Alex will read from his books and essays, providing compelling context to the music that 45th Parallel then performs. This is a co-production with the Patricia Reser Center, and will be recorded for broadcast on All Classical Portland.

About Emily Cole, violin

Emily Cole joined the Oregon Symphony in 2011. An avid chamber musician, Emily is a member of the Mousai Remix string quartet with fellow Oregon Symphony musicians Shin-Young Kwon, Jennifer Arnold, and Marilyn de Oliveira. She has also performed locally with Third Angle Ensemble, fEARnoMUSIC, 45th Parallel, and Northwest New Music. During the summer months, Emily has performed with the Oregon Bach Festival, the Seattle Opera, and the Apollo Music Festival. Emily is on the faculty at Lewis & Clark College; she also coaches chamber musicians with Portland Summer Ensembles and Seattle’s Music Northwest.

Emily earned her M.M. from the University of North Texas, where she held a teaching fellowship and studied with Emanuel Borok. She received her B.M. from the University of Texas at Austin, studying with Brian Lewis. A native of Seattle, Emily was also a longtime student of former Seattle Symphony concertmaster Ilkka Talvi.

About Gregory Ewer, violin

Greg Ewer, hailed by The New York Times for his "refinement and spirit," has been a member of the Oregon Symphony since 2001. Greg is also well known to Portland audiences for his regular appearances with the Portland Baroque Orchestra, Third Angle New Music Ensemble, and Pink Martini. He is also the founder and artistic director of 45th Parallel, a highly acclaimed chamber music series founded in 2009, featuring musicians of the Pacific Northwest.

Greg has appeared as a guest recitalist at Yale University, and at the National Library in Mexico City. He has performed at numerous summer festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Center, San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, Grand Teton Music Festival, Moab Music Festival, and the Montana Baroque Festival.

Greg’s 2014 recording of the Complete Sonatas for Two Violins of Jean-Marie Leclair with his longtime collaborator Adam LaMotte was described as a "landmark recording" and hailed for its "zest and athleticism" by The Strad magazine. In addition to his performing activities, Greg is on the music faculty of Reed College in Portland.

About María García, piano

María García has gained recognition as a soloist, collaborative pianist and teacher. Praised for her "dynamic, warmly expressive and exciting style" she was All Classical Portland Radio's 2022-2023 Artist in Residence and has recorded solo and chamber works for All Classical's Recording Inclusivity Initiative. She began piano studies in her native Puerto Rico at the age of four making her debut with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra at ten. She holds a Bachelor's of Music with Distinction in Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music and a Master's and Doctoral Studies (ABD) from SUNY Stony Brook. Her principal teachers were Luz Hutchinson, Victor Rosenbaum, and Gilbert Kalish. She has performed throughout the United States,Europe, Israel, South America, and Tunisia. In the Portland area, she collaborates with 45th Parallel Universe, Third Angle, Oregon Symphony, and Oregon Ballet Theatre, and was a founding member of the Award-winning 20 Digitus Duo. During the summer she directs the Piano Program at YMA.

Korean-American composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Bora Yoon is an interdisciplinary artist who conjures audiovisual soundscapes using digital devices, voice and found objects and instruments from a variety of cultures and historical centuries—to formulate an audiovisual storytelling through music, movement, and sound.

About Alex Ross, narrator

Alex Ross has been the music critic at The New Yorker since 1996. He writes about classical music, covering the field from the Metropolitan Opera to the contemporary avant-garde, and has also contributed essays on literature, history, the visual arts, film, and ecology. His first book, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century, a cultural history of music since 1900, won a National Book Critics Circle Award and the Guardian First Book Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His second book, the essay collection Listen to This, won an ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award. His latest book is Wagnerism: Art and Politics in the Shadow of Music, an account of Wagner's vast cultural impact. He is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and an Arts and Letters Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
